Leptin and Leptin Resistance: Everything You Need to Know


Is your flab just not leaving you alone, after repeated desperate attempts of endless session of running at the treadmill or the local gym? Your answer lies in the negligence in understanding a hormone by the name leptin. Leptin, in the ideal case should be signaling the brain when a body feels full, starved, empty, okay or relaxed.  Leptin decides on the fact whether to eat, snooze or take a break.   The balance of our body and mind lies in the dose of activities we choose to do and act on through life, respectively. The primary role of this hormone, leptin is to keep an eye on the body’s account of fat, carbohydrates and other energy storage units.  This hormone is produced at the biological level by the fat cells in our body.  The process of how leptin works is relative to the increase in body fat, directly. The associated endocrine gland, hypothalamus alerts the brain of leptin levels and rates in the body, subsequently.


What is Leptin?


Having a Greek etymology, Leptin translates to ‘satiety or satiating hormone’. 


This hormone created is known to be by the produce of adipose cells to regulate or neutralize the awareness of balance of energy in the body. This process is regulated by the senses picking up the hunger pangs through hormone secretions! The hormone is known to be free afloat the blood stream bound to proteins in the body.  Many conditions influence the leptin levels in the body. Some of which are:


a.Short Term fasting for less than 72 hours, but above 24 hours- decreased leptin


b.Vital to the critical response that is adaptive to starvation  


c.Obese patients- increased leptin


d. Insomnia results in lowering the level of serum of leptin


e. Emotional stress hikes leptin levels   


f. Increased testosterone levels result in decreased leptin


g. Increased estrogen levels indicate high leptin


h.Chronically reducing leptin is possible through exercise    


i.Leptin levels is heightened with insulin levels




Leptin is quintessential to the body to be aware of the physical working and health.  For a person to be obese heavily, the body must be highly leptin-resistant. With the increasing resistance to leptin, one’s appetite also grows. Obesity causes the over-oxidation of fat in the body, which in turn, leads to states of low energy and mood. Laziness, in this respect is a state of low mood caused by a highly leptin-resistant body. The effect of this leptin-intensive diet is that our brain becomes highly sensitive to cope with all the resistances and demands of the body in order to reach the healthy or comfortable prior state of stability of leptin, in the body. What is Leptin Resistance? Some basic reasons for leptin resistance can be explained by  


a)     Free Fatty Acids: for the brain to take the right cues to sense the rate of leptin in the body, the fat metabolites should be stabilized. Due to increased fat metabolites which are generated due to free fatty acids that interferes with the transmission and reception of these signals.  


b)     Inflammation: As the hypothalamus picks up cues of leptin rates from the bloodstream, instant reactions of inflammation can occur, which can make the body more resistant to leptin in the body.  


c)      Higher Leptin in the body: This is the primary and resultant cause of leptin resistance. Leptin resistance is high in a body with higher leptin rates.


When leptin resistance is high, the person is obese or overweight. However, the brain is blind to notice this because the signals picked up are contradictory. Simply put, your body is well-fed though your brain believes that it is starving. There are many things one must educate the self about, the total  cover all the other health issues  which can arise due to high leptin-resistant levels of the body.
